A Note From the Principal
Dear Family and Friends,
Welcome to the 2018-19 school year! At South Prairie, we believe that there is nothing more important than giving your child the best education possible. School is a place for growing and learning, and our staff works hard to provide a meaningful learning environment for all students. We also believe in balance; school should be an enjoyable place for our staff and students. We celebrate achievements, value kind-spirited humor, focus on effort, and recognize one another’s positive contributions to our school community. Please take a moment to read our building’s core values to fully appreciate what we find important in education.
South Prairie has a total of 13 classrooms: six 2nd grades, six 3rd grades, and one self-contained program for K-3 students. This year will have added a 2nd grade dual-language classroom to our school and plan to grow the program up to 3rd grade next year. We are a school-wide Title I building which means that we have receive federal funding to support our students in reading and math. Each week our students participate in PE, library, and computer classes. We also offer additional support to our students qualifying for English language development and special education classes. A counselor works with our students to provide guidance in personal safety, building healthy relationships, and in conflict resolution.
South Prairie provides an academically rigorous environment for all students. At Coon Creek, our outdoor classroom, students are able to engage in hands-on learning activities that support Next Generation Science Standards. Through the Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study, our teachers are creating writers who can develop their ideas with details and support their opinions with evidence. In math, our teachers are using Eureka Math curriculum to help students find multiple ways to attack real world situations using math skills. Our reading curriculum, Benchmark Literacy, relies heavily on non-fiction text, small group instruction, and focuses on targeted, specific skill building exercises for young readers.
We welcome family and community involvement in our school and recognize that your support is vital to our success. If you are interested in being a part of the Prairie Dog family, please call or stop by the office for more information. We can be reached at (503) 842-8401.
All the best,
Mrs. Karen Thenell, Principal
